Hi All,
I'm John Mares, and I am an Equine Dental Technician (Lay Dentist). I
am not a veterinarian, but do work closely with them. I would very much
welcome the opportunity to speak with people regarding their herd, and
perhaps setting up an equine dental clinic when possible.
I have been working with horses for the past 22 years and studied
Animal Science at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo while living at the Horse
Unit. My equine responsibilities at Cal Poly included stallion and
broodmare management, foaling, live cover breeding and A.I. While I was
at Cal Poly, I worked nights on a Thoroughbred farm for 4 years foaling
out mares, medicating sick animals and farm security.
My dental training was at The Academy of Equine Dentistry in Glenns
Ferry, Idaho and I have hundreds of hours of wet lab experience and
have been working in the field since 2007. The type of work I perform
is considered “performance dentistry” and incorporates the latest
techniques in regard to properly equilibrating the equine mouth. This
includes balancing the molars, incisors and temporo-mandibular joints
(TMJs). I check to make sure that all of the molars are in simultaneous
occlusion (grinding at the same time), and that the incisors are at the
correct angle to help insure proper nipping. I attend continuing
education a couple of times a year to insure that I keep up with the
current techniques.
Some of the horses and ponies I have worked on are older, and have had
their teeth neglected over the years. It is a very gratifying
experience to watch these horse’s body conditions and personalities
change for the better after working on their teeth.
With regular, periodic dental exams, many problems that would develop
over the years could be corrected before their teeth prematurely age or
are damaged.
All of my power floats are diamond-coated, and tissue-friendly. I use a
gentle touch and a calm voice to help keep the horses and ponies as
calm and comfortable as possible. My instruments are suitable for all
ages and sizes of horses from draft horses and mules to any size of
ponies. I have a miniature dental speculum and narrow burrs for
miniature horses and ponies. Sedation is required to properly
equilibrate the their mouth. You can arrange the sedation, or I can try
try to locate a veterinarian close enough to your facility to sedate
for us.
If you would like a copy of my "Benefits of Equine Dentistry" pamphlet,
drop me a line and I'll mail one out to you.
