Photo of Muffy as a tiny foal.An encounter between a tiny pony & a small boy ...

MUFFY was barely a week old. She didn't quite measure 13" tall and weighed a mere 16 pounds—tiny even by Miniature Shetland standards.

Friends asked if they could visit Greystone Farm with a couple from South America who had a little boy who was very ill. We weren't told what the illness was, but only that they wished their young son to see the small ponies.

The father carried the baby (who was perhaps a year old) into MUFFY's stall where she lay near her mother, CUPCAKE. We placed the little boy, only a baby himself, on the straw near MUFFY and we were shocked when she lay her own little head on the baby's chest. CUPCAKE stood nearby and watched.

For perhaps five minutes there was total silence. Nothing moved. There was not a single sound. Then the father gathered up his son and carried him to the car.

As we watched the father and his son settle into the car, I looked with the mother at the little boy's face. There were tears running down his pale cheekcs. The mother turned to me and said quietly, "I have never before seen Peter cry."

I do not know what passed between this tiny pony and this small boy—but surely we witnessed something very special.

We were told later that Peter died that week...
